Fort Brescou — Cap d'Agde

1.5 km offshore from Cap d'Agde, Fort Brescou stands on a volcanic basalt islet (2.7 ha, 740,000 years old). Built in 1586 by Guillaume de Joyeuse, reinforced by Vauban, used as a state prison from 1680 to 1852, and given a lighthouse in 1836. Closed to visitors since 2005, with restoration works ongoing since 2019.
