Grande Conque Beach — Cap d'Agde
Black basalt sand · Unique in France · 21 m cliffs
Grande Conque is a true rarity on the French Mediterranean coast: its sand is black, made of volcanic basalt from Mont Saint-Loup. Crescent-shaped at the foot of 21 m cliffs, it offers an open panorama over Cap d'Agde and the Mediterranean. A visually stunning beach, very different from the usual golden sand.
Why is the sand black?
740,000 years ago, the Mont Saint-Loup volcano poured its lava flows down to the sea. This basalt — dark, dense volcanic rock — was eroded by waves over millennia, producing the dark grains that carpet Grande Conque. The same basalt gave Agde its black colour and the nickname "Black Pearl of the Mediterranean".
